5 | Regarding the quarantine inspection for imported canned livestoc... |
Q. I plan to import canned beef from Brazil for the first time, but I am not yet fully aware of the relevant regulations. Should I have even small quantities of sample products or regularly imported products quarantined each time I go through the customs clearance procedure? What are the required declaration forms to facilitate the clearance of products? Likewise, please inform me of the required sanitation standard for quarantine. ================================================ Answer: The following information is given as per your request: Should I have even small quantities of sample products or regularly imported products quarantined each time I go through the customs clearance procedure? ⇒ When importing the designated quarantine goods, even regularly imported products or small quantities of products should be quarantined in accordance with Article 36 (Quarantine Inspection for Imported Goods) of the Livestock Epidemic Prevention and Control Act. In case of clearly labeled livestock products, e.g., free sample products or advertising goods, however, you need not declare them in accordance with Article 15 (Declaration of Imported Livestock Products) of the Livestock Product Processing Law. Required documents for quarantine inspection ⇒ This has reference to your request for the importation of processed livestock products (beef ribs) from Brazil. Please be informed that beef cannot be imported from Brazil, which is included in the list of Regions of Designated Quarantine Goods Blacklisted for Import (Notice No. 2005-36 by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, May 20, 2005). As per Article 4 (BSE Products) of the Range and Standard for the Sterilization, Pasteurization, and Processing of Designated Quarantine Goods (Notice No. 2003-7) by the Quarantine Service, sterilized and processed meat products (under the Livestock Product Processing Law) packaged by can, jar, and retort pouch and may be kept and distributed at room temperature can be imported, provided the Certificate of Quarantine issued by the Veterinary Quarantine Authority of the exporting country and BSE Free Certificate are presented. |

Q. I am running a franchise of the Gelato (ice cream) business. The raw materials for the Gelato are imported due to its characteristics. Can milk and cream be imported as well? I am aware that low-temperature pasteurized milk, high-temperature pasteurized milk, and sterilized milk are available. 3 | I would like to inquire about the importation of beef jerky. |
Q. I really appreciate your services. I would like to ask about the importation of beef jerky. I want to sell half-cooked (as in a marinade) pork, beef, and chicken jerky imported from Singapore. They should be imported as half-cooked jerky and subjected to a cooking process. Is importation possible in this case? What kind of process should I go through in accordance with the relevant regulations? ================================================ Answer: The importation of processed meat products containing ingredients such as beef, pork, and chicken from Singapore is restricted as per the notice on the Regions of Designated Quarantine Goods Blacklisted for Import. Note, however, that products that have been subjected to the sterilization process, e.g., Dry Heat Sterilization (160~170℃for 1~2 hours), Moist Heat Sterilization (121℃for 15~20 minutes or 115℃ for 35 minutes) or its the equivalent, in accordance with the Range and Standard for the Sterilization, Pasteurization, and Processing of Designated Quarantine Goods (Notice No. 2003-7) by the Quarantine Service then put into airtight containers or packages for warehousing and distribution can be imported. 2 | Certificate of Vaccination for Dogs (and cats) |
Q. I am currently staying in Thailand, and I want to bring my cat to Korea in about two weeks. I may be able to prepare some of the necessary documents when I leave Thailand next week. While searching for the relevant information, however, I found out that a Rabies Vaccination Certificate is required. Should I request for its issuance from a veterinary hospital? ================================================ Answer: The required documents for bringing your cat from Thailand include the Rabies Vaccination Certificate issued by a veterinary hospital or Certificate of Quarantine issued by a Quarantine Authority in Thailand. The documents should clearly state that the 30-day immunity formation period has passed starting from the date of rabies vaccination, and that the immunity period is valid. If the Certificate of Vaccination is presented as veterinary certificate, an original copy with the following information can be verified: - Breed, sex, age, fur color, and physical characteristics of the cat - Date of rabies vaccination, type of vaccine administered, and effective period of rabies vaccination - Name, address, and contact number of the stated veterinary hospital - Name and signature of the veterinarian who issued the certificate and veterinary license no. If the date of rabies vaccination is unknown, or the 30-day immunity formation period has not passed after the vaccination, the pet will need to be confined in quarantine until the immunity formation period has passed. In this case, you shall be asked to pay fees for the transport, veterinary treatment, and housing and maintenance. |

1 | I would like to bring my pet bird with me when I go to the US for... |
Q. I have a 10-month old parrot that I plan to bring with me to the US when I go there this September. I will be staying there for about two months. As such, I am wondering where I should report upon arrival and departure and what kind of procedure I should follow. How much time and cost would be incurred for the procedure? ================================================ Answer: Upon arriving from America, you may bring your bird and present the Certificate of Quarantine in compliance with the Sanitation Standard for Pet Birds Importation as announced by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry on July 8, 1995 (No. 1995-54). In addition, you will be quarantined by a Quarantine Officer at the airport when you arrive. If you hand-carry your bird, and no problems are found during the document and clinical inspections, you may take the bird home that same day without paying quarantine fees. If a bird is brought in freight, the quarantine period and fees would be 5 days and KRW 20,000, respectively. Besides, you may be asked to pay for incidental expenses such as housing and maintenance fees for animals during the confinement period in Quarantine. Since the import and export of some animals and plants are restricted in accordance with the Convention on the International Trade of Endangered Species (CITES), however, please contact the person in charge at the Ministry of Environment (02-2110-6754) for further information. |
