[Government bans Italian mozzarella]
The government has banned the sale of Italian mozzarella made from buffalo milk because dioxins exceeding the acceptable level were found in the cheese, officials said yesterday.
The Ministry of Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said that it has ordered the national veterinary research and quarantine service to reinforce quarantines on these products, and to verify their distribution channels. The ministry also instructed governors and mayors in provincial cities to stop the sale of the Italian-imported mozzarella cheese.
The government`s move came after foreign media reported that an excessive amount of dioxins was found in 29 Italian mozzarella manufacturers` buffalo milk. The reporters said that the Italian government has launched an investigation into the case.
The Korean government will collect samples of Italian buffalo-milk mozzarella, and examine whether they actually contain dioxins. Subsequent measures will be taken, depending on the test results, the ministry officials said.
About 10 tons of Italian buffalo-milk mozzarella has been imported here this year and then distributed to nationwide pizza stores and major retail chains, according to the ministry.
