[Potential MAF Minster Places People’s Safety as Top Priority in Beef Issue]
Ministerial candidate Jung Woon-cheon for the Ministry of Agriculture & Forestry (MAF) conveyed his beliefs during personnel hearing on Wednesday that his chief priority in the U.S. beef quarantine issue is the safety of Korean nationals.
In response to assemblyman Kim Nak-seong’s (Liberty Forward Party) comment from the National Assembly’s Agriculture, Forestry, Maritime Affairs & Fisheries Committee, “Korean people feel that there is serious sanitation problem with U.S. beef especially due to the frequent violation of quarantine conditions last year and the recent beef recall incident. However, the government is promoting to further relax the importation conditions,” Jung replied, “Safety of the nationals is the most important issue in the sanitary matter, thus no setbacks will be made in examining scientific verifications and safety standards when progressing the importation.”
He added, “Reforming and resolving fundamental problems, such as import beefs disguised as domestic meat, will create an additional 20 to 30 percent demands. Moreover, it was agreed among livestock associations that modifying distributions will greatly help domestic livestock farmers.”
Meanwhile, the potential MAF minister blurred his view on the ratification of KORUS FTA stating, “I believe the issue is now to be thoughtfully handled by the National Assembly as it was handed over after being compromised by the government last June.”
