Korea plans to launch a full-fledged research and development (R&D) project on the prevention of bird flu and other infectious diseases among humans and animals, officials said Friday (Feb. 16).
The Ministry of Science and Technology said that together with the health and agriculture ministries, it will start the project aimed at tackling avian influenza, rabies and brucellosis.
Korea has reported six separate outbreaks of avian influenza among poultry since Nov. 25. The latest case was discovered last week in Anseong, 77 kilometers south of Seoul.
The government's measures against the outbreaks have so far been limited to quarantine steps, such as culling the affected poultry.
Details of the project will be finalized at a ministerial science and health meeting slated for March, which will also attended by private experts, officials said.
The Geneva-based World Health Organization believes the bird flu virus can mutate into a highly virulent strain that can easily be transmitted to humans if left unchecked.
In 2003 and 2004, Korea destroyed more than 5 million poultry to curb the spread of avian influenza.
