Korea agreed yesterday to resume imports of American beef, including meat with bones, from cattle under the age of 30 months, the Ministry of Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said in a release.
Korea also agreed to allow beef imports from cattle older than 30 months as long as the U.S. toughens standards on food for the cattle, including banning protein-based feed.
Every part of the animal can be imported except the “specified risk materials,” including the brain, backbone, tongue and bone marrow, as defined by the World Organization for Animal Health.
The United States agreed to immediately notify Korea if there is another outbreak of mad cow disease there. If an investigation then shows that certain conditions are not being met, Korea can discontinue the imports.
The U.S. imports stopped in October after some beef shipments were found to contain bones, which was not allowed at the time.
The change comes after a six-month suspending of quarantine inspections of U.S. beef due to discoveries of backbones in shipments.
