Korea's Home Affairs Ministry said Tuesday (Jan. 23) it provided 500 million won ($530,500) to a local government to help cope with a fresh outbreak of bird flu. Quarantine workers have culled about 100,000 poultry since the latest outbreak, the fifth of its kind since November, was reported on a chicken farm in Cheonan, about 90 kilometers south of Seoul. The quarantine authorities said they would slaughter an additional 565,000 poultry in the area. The emergency aid is to be spent on the purchase of disinfectants and other quarantine-related equipment, the Ministry of Government Administration and Home Affairs said in a statement. The ministry said it provided 3 billion won to local autonomous governments to help prevent the spread of bird flu last year. quoted from www.korea.net |
