The government will increase the number of quarantine inspections on domestically raised cattle in line with the resumption of the U.S. beef import this week, officials said Wednesday.
Quarantine authorities said they are planning to increase the budget and the number of inspectors for the detection of bovine spongiform encephalopathy ― commonly known as mad cow disease ― at local slaughterhouses.
The goal is to obtain enough test cases for the application of a safety assessment from the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) this year.
"We are having internal discussions to expand our quarantine team"said at the National Veterinary Research & Quarantine Service." We have been carefully monitoring domestic cattle and we believe we did good enough for the health of the people. he said.
There has been no reported case of mad cow disease in South Korea, while recently there were two in the United States, one in 2006 and the other in 2005.
