The government said Wednesday that it will temporarily halt the sale of ducks and chickens in traditional open markets to prevent the further spread of bird flu in the country, reported Yonhap News Agency.
The Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said the measures, which are to go into effect immediately, will involve markets in the country`s provincial cities and towns.
Quarantine inspectors will increase on-site inspections in larger traditional markets to check the health of birds and generally discourage trade for a few months, until the outbreaks die down, the ministry said.
The measures come amid reports that two outbreaks reported this week may have been transmitted through provincial markets.
In the past, the government had concentrated quarantine efforts on large-scale poultry farms and butchering facilities, but overlooked traditional markets.
"The two cases in Ulju County and Daegu may have been caused by infected ducks transmitting the avian virus to chickens that were then sold at traditional markets," Kim Chang-seob, chief veterinary officer at the ministry, said.
Kim said that sanitation authorities will put the 300 vehicles that transport birds to traditional markets through a disinfection process after every delivery, a measure to reduce the risk of vehicles causing more contamination.
