Results and conclusion
Results:
The common gross lesion is severely friable liver. Spleens were increased in size with multifocal white spots. Egg
yolk peritonitis was observed due to yolk escaping into the abdominal cavity. Main histopathologic lesions were
seen in the brain, liver, lung, heart, kidney, spleen, pancreas, ovary and oviduct. Basically, the histologic lesions
consist of multiorgans necrosis and/or inflammation. These lesions consisted mainly of neuronal necrosis,
meningoencephalitis, severe coagulative necrotic hepatitis, cardiac myocytes necrosis, renal tubule necrosis,
lymphocyte necrosis in spleen, interstitial pneumonia, pancreatic acinar epithelial cells necrosis and vacuolation,
severe enteritis, inflammation in theca interna and medullary interstitium of ovary and necrosis of oviduct’s epithelium.
Based on immunohistochemistry, influenza virus antigens were observed mainly in the nucleus of parenchymal cells
and vascular endothelium in multiple organs except reproductive system. Also, the viral antigens were detected in the
theca interna of ovary and the surface epithelial cells in the oviduct. There was an association between the location of
viral antigen and histological lesions.
Conclusion:
The HPAI viruses spread systemically. The virus replicates within endothelial cells and spreads via the
vascular or lymphatic systems to infect and replicate in a variety of cell types in visceral organs and brain. Clinical
signs and death are due to multiple organ failure. Moreover, virus replication in the epithelial cells of the oviduct may
be suggested that the infection was ascending locally from cloaca to ovary through lumen and the possibility that the
virus might be transmitted to the eggshell or internal contents of eggs.
