Fourth Meeting of the parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety was held in Bonn, Germany from 12 to 16 May 2008.
147 countries including the Republic of Korea attended this meeting.
A representative of the Republic of Korea was comprised of 15 persons who came from five ministries including Ministry of foreign affairs and trade, Ministry of knowledge economy, Ministry for agriculture, forestry and fisheries, Ministry of environment, and Ministry for health, welfare and family affairs.
The objective of the Cartagena Protocol is to establish an adequate level of protection worldwide in the field of the transfer, handling and use of genetically modified organisms(GMOs) that may have adverse effects on the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity, taking also into account risks to human health.
The Protocol also regulates measures regarding the transboundary movement of genetically modified organisms at the level of international law.
The meeting of the contracting states to the Cartagena Protocol that takes place regularly in parallel to the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity serves as a steering body for the implementation of the Protocol.
The key role of the meeting of the parties is the ongoing monitoring of the implementation of the Cartagena Protocol and the taking of decisions that are required to improve and promote its application.
The meetings were initially held on an annual basis and from 2006 every two years. Next meeting will be opened in Nagoya, Japan in 2010.
