A research team in Toxicology and Chemistry Division got a patent on ""Effect based biomarker, Apo A-1 for borminated compounds and diagnostic kit thereof" on July 3, 2007.
The patent was come from a reserch project "Determination of multi-toxicity of chemicals on multi-organs using SELDI-
TOF protein chips and whole-body tissue array" performed by Dr. Sang-Hee Jeong et al.
They searched for a specific and sensitive biomarker of brominated compounds (PBDEs) that are used for flame
retardants and accumulated in animal originated food for their high affinity to lipid.
Brominated compounds are endocrine disruptors and induce develomental and cognitive disorders
especially in young children.
A protein dose-dependently increased by PBDEs with specificity in rat blood plasma was identified as Apo A-1, a lipid
transport protein, by SELDI-TOF and affinity assay in their study.
The protein and techniques issued by the patent can be expected to be used preciously for the detection and
evaluation of brominated compound in livestock animal husbandary field and so on.
