Korea's quarantine authorities said Friday (Dec. 22) they have culled all chickens and ducks in the area where the latest bird flu outbreak was reported.
"All birds from 36 farms located within a 3-kilometer radius of the duck farm in Asan have been destroyed to prevent any possibility of bird flu spreading to other areas," said a spokesman for the regional quarantine authority. The Asan farm is located 90 km south of Seoul.
He said that 22,500 animals from 36 farms have been disposed of in accordance with quarantine regulations.
One of duck farms reported the sudden death of large numbers of birds on Dec. 11, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry said Thursday night, adding that detailed tests showed a highly pathogenic form of avian influenza was responsible.
It said a ban is also in place to control the movement of chickens, ducks and eggs within a 10-km radius of the affected area.
Korea reported three separate outbreaks of the disease before the latest incident in Asan. The first outbreak was reported on Nov. 22 in Iksan.
As of early this week, the government has destroyed 1.12 million birds from 171 farms.
